Windows Vista RC1 is available for download now to Techbeta members, and more broadly available next week. I am downloading it now, the last build I tried was very solid, it will be fun to see what RC1 brings to the table.
I am still missing drivers for the built-in video camera on the Sony SZ laptops.

It looks like Microsoft has issued a fix to the DRM hack, it will require new client code for every Windows Media subscription service but it doesn't look like it will require the music services to re-encode their media - which would have been a huge task.
The DRM hack was first published on 8/19/2006 and fixed on 8/28/2006. Interestingly enough, it doesn't look like Microsoft knew of it until Engaged published the article on the 25th... See Microsoft's email to Windows Media Licensees.

Microsoft's DRM technology has been hacked, rendering all existing digital music subscription services effectively shut down until a fix is made available.
With the tool mentioned in the article above, one is able to convert their subscription music files to a DRM free WMA file that can be copied, transferred to music players, converted to MP3s, and/or burned to CDs without any restrictions.
I wonder how long it will be until Yahoo, Napster, and others have to shut down their subscription services in response to the DRM hack. I haven't seen any announcements yet, but I bet one will be forthcoming.
More importantly, I wonder how quickly Microsoft will be able to respond to this latest hack.

Windows Vista, as everyone is reporting, is fast approaching its release candidate. Until now, every Windows Vista build that I installed was done on a clean, reformatted machine - not an upgrade over Windows XP SP2. With the pre-RC1 build, Microsoft is requesting that we test the upgrade scenario.
It should be an interesting test and great indication of how ready Vista is to be released. The system that I have available for testing is a Sony Vaio SZ140P laptop that has a lot of custom hardware that has yet to work on the previous Windows Vista builds. Let's see how this pre-RC1 build holds up to the upgrade test.
Before I can begin, I need to spend a ton of time re-imaging my machine back to Win XP and burning the Windows Vista DVD image - joy.

I managed to get Windows Vista build 5472 installed on a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ140P laptop. The first run was abysmal, Vista installed a default VGA driver and almost nothing worked, I couldn't click on the Start menu, couldn't install new drivers, it was bad. Eventually I managed to reboot Windows Vista and things were much better the second time around.
I managed to switch my video to the nvidia GeForce Go 7400 card (instead of the motherboard Intel 945GM chipset) but I had to manually download the drivers from the Sony web-site.
The built-in video camera is not working as Vista does not support the camera natively and Sony's Windows XP do not work on Vista. As a result, I do not have video nor a working microphone. Major bummer for any hopes to use a VOIP and IM application.
Without a microphone, I won't be able to try out Vista's speech recognition interface - major bummer.
I managed to install the Bluetooth drivers from the Sony website, but none of the included Sony Bluetooth applets work (Bluetooth Settings, Bluetooth Information Exchange, etc). In effect, this renders bluetooth worthless on the laptop.
I have not been able to install the Intel 945GM video drivers. I can only use the faster, but more power hungry, nvidea video card - this is going to hurt battery performance.
The sony drivers for the memory card reader seem to work fine, but they must be manually installed - no supported drivers are included with this build of Windows Vista.
Windows Vista recognized the fingerprint scanner, but there are no applications that makes use of it. Sony's Protector Suite QL does not work on Vista (as expected). As a result, you loose the ability to login to Windows and other sites using the fingerprint reader.
Windows Device Manager still shows 4 devices as un-recognized (maybe the 1394 interface, a "UGX" device - whatever that means, and 2 others).
That's as far as I am going to explore tonight. While Windows Vista is working, and in fact I am writing this blog entry on my Vista machine using Microsoft's own new Windows Live Writer, I would not say that Vista can be used as a primary system on this Sony laptop.
Windows Vista, so far, lacks too many drivers to make this laptop truly operational.

I am going to be giving Windows Vista a second look. The last time I tried Vista was back in May (build 5381), just prior to the public beta release.
I have access to Vista build 5472 which I will install on Dell desktop. Let's see how far the OS has come in the past 3 month. Hopefully, this time around, I will not have to dig around the web for basic drivers for the build in hardware in my Dell (sound card, WiFi card, Network, etc...)
My main curiosity is to check out Vista's speech recognition interface.

It looks like Search your computers is working again on Foldershare. From what I could tell, Foldershare was having system difficulties, preventing most, but not all, of my clients from logging on. Right now, I am logged on again from my MacBook Pro and I can once again search all of my machines!
I sure hope Microsoft will maintain full support for Mac OS as they enhance and integrate Foldershare with the rest of Microsoft Live services.

Microsoft released a beta of the Vista Upgrade Advisor yesterday only to quickly take it offline today. Oh well...
I should have known better, especially since this is not the final Beta 2 public release. The current build 5381 of Windows Vista is not ready to be my primary work desktop.
- No support for my HP Officejet 7100 printer
- No support for the audio card in my HP M7167 desktop
- No support for my virus checker - Windows One Care
And more importantly, a constant stream of blue screens and overall system instability.
I will give Vista another try when Microsoft releases a public beta, and I will hold judgment until then as well.
For now, I am back to Windows XP on my work desktop (and OS X everywhere else).
I finished installing Vista build 5381 on my Dell. Setup worked, but not without its issues:
Wireless Network - I use a Linksys WUSB54G usb wireless adapter, Vista does not have built in drivers for this wireless adapter. As a result, I was not online after installing Vista. I had to go download the drivers from Linksys and manually install it on Vista in order to go online. Vista connected to my wireless network but "had limited availability". It took 3 retries for it to establish a successful connection - weird.
Windows Mail - unable to connect natively to my Hotmail account, it asks for a POP3 or IMAP settings. I hope MSN/Hotmail will be supported natively by Windows Mail.
Windows Messenger - where is it? I can't find a native IM client. I suppose I could download one from http://ideas.live.com, but won't Vista ship with one by default?
Enough playing around. I am going to install an IM client (Windows Live Messenger), VOIP (Skype), anti-virus (one care), Office 2003 and then let my family use this computer for a few days to see how it holds up to our daily PC chores.
I have been avoiding installing Windows Vista for 6 months now, but I told a friend today that I would take the time to install the latest official "friends and family" build this weekend and provide my feedback - privately.
Vista setup is currently at 27% "Copying Windows files" on a newly formatted Dell Dimension 5100C with 2GB of RAM, 250 GB HD, and an unknown video card (I never used this box before).
I must admit, I am kind of excited to be installing a new version of Windows for the first time in over 4 years. How will it compare to my Macs? Is this build close enough to a public beta? I will know soon enough.
I will post my overall impression here in the next few days - without compromising any confidentiality agreement.
I am giving Apple's Bootcamp solution a second try. The main reason for the reinstall is that I want to compare the performance of Parallels Workstation VM against native Windows XP, as well as compare Bibble running on OS/X vs. Windows.
I noticed once again that my power management functions do not work under bootcamp -- the screen saver is never activated, the display never goes dark, the MacBook Pro never goes into sleep mode while running Windows. I wonder when a beta 2 of Bootcamp with updated Windows drivers will be available.
I should have the MacBook Pro performance tests done later on today.
Apple has started a new TV campaign titled "Why you will love a Mac". They have 6 30 seconds TV commercials emphasizing key Mac strengths, the 6 videos are available for viewing or downloading online.
The "Why you will love a mac" web page lists 14 reasons why you will love a mac.
I did get a chuckle out of reason #6 - who would have thought that Apple would ever be bragging about Intel Inside ;-)
And #13 is also funny - no need to hunt for drivers when only 1% of the hardware out there works on a Mac!

Continuing with my effort to have a Windows XP free house when we move, I realized that I will need a replacement for my Orb/Windows Media Center combination. I have been a user of Orb since they launched last year. It has worked great for us, but it requires a Windows Media Center PC in order to stream TV across the internet. Since there won't be a Media Center PC in the new house, I loose my ability to use Orb.
In comes SlingBox - SlingBox replaces the Orb/Media Center combination and it enables you to stream your TV to any internet connected PC or windows mobile device.
Unfortunately, the SlingPlayer requires a Windows PC. Ahhhhrrr. The switching pains continues to add up.
SlingMedia needs to update their tagline to say "The only place you can't take your TV IS THE AFTERLIFE or your MAC OS/X Computer".
Can I install the SlingPlayer on an Apple Mac OS-based device?
Not yet, unfortunately. We just demonstrated a Mac version and expect it to be available in the first half of 2006. It will be fully compatible with the current Slingbox hardware.
The beast is unleashed. Here are my initial first impressions.
I just yesterday unpacked and configured my Sony SZ 140. The first experience between the two couldn't be more extreme. Start with the packaging, the Sony comes rapped in a plastic filament tied to a cardboard sheet. The first paper you see when you open the box is "How to return your Sony". I won't dwell on this first boot experience too long, much has been said about it elsewhere, suffice it to say that Apple wins this comparison 10 to 1.
Can someone please tell Sony to stop shipping all of the junk software with their very nicely designed and equipped laptop? They put so much junk in it that it makes the machine almost useless out of the box. My first instinct with every Sony I buy is to format it clean and start from scratch.
There is only one area where the Sony came out ahead. After booting and setting up my wireless network I proceeded to run a software update to pick up all of the patches and security fixes. Sony w/ Windows XP Pro had to download 42MB of patches, my MacBook Pro w/ OS/X is downloading 250.2 MB of updates - nearly 6x as much as my Windows machine.
Apple could have done a better job pre-loading the latest patches onto their MacBook Pro. As it stands, I will spend the next hour or so downloading updates before I can use my new Mac.
The new machine is slightly smaller than my PowerBook, but also slightly wider (by insignificant amounts), the one bummer is that the power supply is much bigger than the PowerBook and about twice as heavy. The battery is also twice as big, but comparable to my Sony Core Duo laptop. From all of the reviews I have read, battery performance is ~2h, no better than the PowerBook, too bad.
You can always tell Apple laptop users from their Windows counterpart because Apple users are within 6' to a power outlet. Can't wait for a true lightweight, sub 3 lbs, 7.5h battery life Apple notebook like Sony's TX series.
Once it became clear that you could run Windows XP on an Intel Mac, I decided that it was time to order a MacBook Pro and simplify my travels by just carrying a single laptop. I had been holding off on an Intel Mac until some key applications had been ported over to run natively on an Intel Mac (primarily Office and Photoshop). The decision to hold off became void once I could consider an Intel Mac as a valid Windows laptop (for business purposes). Even though Mac Office and Photoshop CS 2 won't be ported to an Intel Mac for a long while, I ordered my MacBook Pro just before leaving for Las Vegas.
My MacBook Pro arrived while I was in Vegas! It is sitting right here on a nice black box waiting to be unleashed.
I want to put Apple to the test and see if it lives up to their 4x faster claim.
I got a model with 15" display, 2.16 GHz Core-Duo, 2GB RAM, 100GB 7,500 rpm HD. The machine should be a screamer, certainly the best Apple has to offer right now.
I also have a Sony VGN-SZ 140 Windows laptop with nearly identical specs - 2.16 GHz Core-Duo, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD. It will be cool to compare performance between these 2 system.
I plan on running some performance comparisons, doing RAW photo conversions using Bibble 4.7 on about 25 RAW files. I will run Bibble 4.7 on all test system and will compare the total time to complete the 25 file conversions.

I have been thinking about my post a few days ago on Windows Vista doing little more than what OS X did 1 year ago. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it doesn't matter. If Windows Vista is 75% as cool, as sexy, and as easy to use as OS X, then Vista will be a huge success.
Bringing together a tighter integration and manipulation of digital media, a built in system wide deep search technology, enhanced UI with great graphics, a widget system, and a more secure OS will be a huge hit with Windows users.
The fact that Apple did it first won't matter. The truth is that it will be Vista that will make these technologies universal. It will be Windows Vista that will bring these "innovations" to the broad public. It is the simple logic of ~95% market share.
Microsoft, I hope, has realized that they made a huge mistake by failing to refresh Windows for 5 years. But their desktop OS dominance is such that its market share has not been compromised. Its image has taken a beating, comments like the ones from Walt Mossberg - "...Macs have sleeker hardware designs, a superior operating system, much better built-in software..." must hurt. But in the end, Microsoft's market share has not changed much. Mac users may benefit from new technology innovation sometimes years before Windows users, but it is Microsoft who makes them available to the masses.
The burden is on Apple to out innovate Microsoft in order to keep its small market share growing, even if by single digits.
I can't wait to see what Leopard will bring to Mac fans in early 07.
At last I have found a great solution to my desire to run only Macs at home while at the same time appeasing the family members who prefer not to switch.
Apple, on Tuesday, made available Boot Camp. Book Camp is Apple's supported method to install Windows XP on your Intel Mac. The best part is that Apple is providing the necessary drivers to ensure that the Mac will function properly within Windows (networking, sound, graphics, wireless, etc).
A match made in heaven, and the nail in the coffin for anyone arguing against running Macs exclusively! Come to think of it, there is no reason why I now couldn't run Macs even in the office!

"For mainstream computer users doing typical tasks, Apple Computer's Macintosh models have huge advantages over the prevalent Windows computers from companies such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard. There is an interesting video on Google Video that takes a Microsoft Windows Vista demonstration and performs all tasks on an existing Mac running last year's OS X operating system with the bundled iLife suite.

I sure hope there will be more to Windows Vista than a re-hash of what's already available on OS X. Time for Microsoft to re-think their Vista demo script.
My Sony Windows laptop is dying - Windows takes 8 minutes to "load" after I log into my account. Things got so bad, that I decided it was time to "format c:\" and start afresh.
When it came time to accept the Windows XP license agreement by pressing F8, I discovered that my function keys are not working. That's too bad - the machine is not even 1 year old yet. Off it goes to Sony for repair.
In the mean time, I have been looking for a dual-core replacement Windows laptop. Not that many choices in the market yet. Thinkpad has an interesting one with their X60 laptop and it looks like Sony has one as well with their Sony Vaio SZ series.
The SZ is very similar to a new MacBook Pro -- Dual Core chips at 2.16 GHz, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD, built in video camera, built in microphone, DVD burner. The main difference is the 13.1" widescreen display on the Sony vs. the 15" display on the Apple; and of course, only one of these machines can run both OS X and Windows XP. Sony also offers T-Mobile Edge wireless connection - a nice plus while traveling.
I am curious as how these 2 machines compare in the performance front. I am curious to see which system will do better with RAW photo conversions. Maybe it is time for an across the board laptop replacement!
Update: No sooner I posted this entry that I saw elsewhere that both Dell and Toshiba have announced their new lines of dual-core laptops... Maybe it is time to go back to Dells for my work laptop.
WinXPonaMac is reporting that you can now run Win XP on a MacIntel box - natively, no emulation! This could be the missing link that will enable me to switch all of my house-hold PCs to iMacs exclusively. For those annoying occasions that I need to access a Windows only application or service I can boot into native Windows XP.
Install instructions will be posted shortly - time to order my first Intel Mac!
I bet, however, that multimedia apps (sound, 3D, integrated video camera) won't work that well initially due to lack of proper drivers - but maybe this is also just a matter of time until new drivers become available.

When we move homes this summer, my plan is to have a MS Windows free house-hold. Both of our Windows Media Center PCs have stopped working and I haven't bothered to figure out why - (interestingly, my Tivo Series 1 from 1998 still works). Media Center and its Windows problems just became too much hassle -- TV is suppose to just work, and adding Windows to the mix breaks that rule.
iTunes and iPhoto do a great job sharing content across Macs, I figured our new house should be a Windows Free environment. With iTunes TV Show, I can get the 2 shows I watch in a commercial free format, and I can use my Tivo in the rare occasion we are watching live TV.
Macs Minis could power up the living room and bedroom TVs, iMacs for the den, kitchen and homework areas, and a PowerBook and Mac Book Pro for mobility.
The problem is that I am running into heavy opposition from my family. My daughter flat out refuses to switch - "there are many more educational software for Windows than for the Mac, and I can't use MSN on the Mac." My wife just finds OS X harder to use and doesn't want to bother with web site incompatibility with Safari (a lot does not work w/ Safari forcing you to use Firefox and losing out on .Mac synchronization). Then there is the video conferencing issue - our friends and family members use Windows Messenger, and you can't video conference with them via a Mac. My hope here is that Skype will support cross-platform video conference soon, but it is not available yet.
Maybe the solution is to let my family members self-manage their own Windows PC; in about 30 days or less, the machine will crank to a halt and we would have a virtual Windows Free household after all.
With the pace of innovation in computer technology, it is not uncommon to find yourself with home computers that are outdated and no longer being used.
Before you pass on your old computer to another owner (donate it, sell it, etc) you should take great care to ensure that your private data has been properly deleted.
Unfortunately, deleting a file is not sufficient. Deleted files can be easily restored. Even formating a HD is not sufficient to ensure that you data cannot be recovered by someone else.
Deletion is not secure. When you delete a file the first letter of the filename in a directory entry is changed to a special character, but the file’s data remains on the disk. It may remain on the hard drive until it is overwritten by another file. And even in cases where your data has been overwritten, there are specialized program that can retrieve the information.
A recent study by a security firm has found that used HD that are being sold on ebay and other auction sites still contain sensitive user data that can be easily recovered. They have found tax returns, bank statement, private photographs, etc... In many cases, they even found company confidential information.
How can you ensure that your data in not compromised when you donate or sell your used computer?
WIndows users can use a program called QuickWiper to securely delete their data. QuickWiper is a file wipe utility with system cleaner. Use it to securely erase files from your hard disk. QuickWipe supports NSA erasure algorithm – data is overwritten seven times with “0” pattern then with “1” and so on. It is the best method for quick and secure deletion.
Before you sell you Windows PC to buy Apple's new dual core iMac make sure to run a utility like QuickWiper to ensure that your personal data is safely deleted.
Why do I keep torturing myself with Sony products? Sony designs what I consider to be the best looking "Windows" laptops. But for the past few years Sony has embarked in a series of mistakes that have greatly hurt their image - proprietary and buggy software, proprietary memory stick, intrusive obnoxious and probably illegal DRM technology on their music CDs, the list goes on.
Two days ago I purchased and then quickly returned the Sony DSC-N1 photo camera because of what I consider a flawed design. Earlier today I called Sony Style to purchase a Sony Vaio TX 670 laptop for my sister. I actually picked up the phone and called Sony instead of purchasing it via the web because I need to ensure that the laptop would arrive by Wednesday. The salesman assured me that it would as long as I paid extra for the shipping. With his assurances in place, I went ahead with the purchase.
As the day come to a close, I got concerned that I had never received the confirmation email from Sony regarding my order and the shipping information. Checking for my order information online listed a status of On Hold. I called Sony again to see if they were having problems with my order. This time, the person who answered my call said that I should have never been told that the order would ship today or that it would arrive on Wednesday. She said that they typically take 2 days to process an order, and that it would take a further 2 days to deliver the product. At best I would have the laptop on Friday - 2 days after I needed the laptop.
Is there no end to Sony's self-inflicted troubles?
I would tell my sister to walk over to her nearest Apple store and pick a 15" Powerbook, but unfortunately Columbia Business School does not support/allow Macs in their business school program.
After Sony's latest mistake, we are now left with the daunting tasks of find a great sub-notebook laptop within the next 48 hours.
I have an idea - I wonder if she will go for a swap :-) I will fed-ex her my 6 months old T350P laptop so she can have it by Wednesday and I will keep her new TX 670 machine! Let's see if she goes for it!
Why in the age of Skype and VoIP providers, do Windows laptop designers insist on making laptops without a built in microphone?
My beloved Sony Vaio VGN-T350P does not have a microphone, which makes it supper inconvenient for handling Skype conversations. I just purchased a new laptop for my parents which also does not have a built in Mic - just dreadful. Had I known in advance, I don't think I would have purchased the machine after all.
And why is it that I can only find 1 single Windows laptop with a built in web-cam? The only Windows laptop that I am aware off that has a built-in camera is the new Sony FJ series. Maybe Dell, HP and others are waiting for Apple to set the tone so they can just follow Apple's lead - why would anyone wan to be out in front all alone?

After my 30 days ban on Windows, my wife asked me to look at her Win XP Pro system that is acting up. A quick inspection shows that my virus definitions subscription license expired on 1899. I knew Windows XP was getting old, but I didn't know it was this old :-)
Apparently Norton SystemWorks' installation has gotten corrupt and it needs to be uninstalled and then re-installed.
Maybe this is the excuse I need to swap the kitchen Win XP machine with either a Mac mini, or a iMac G5. The biggest problem I will face, besides a mini revolt, will be the need to replace all of the educational software we have accumulated over the years.
For now, I am planning on re-installing Norton SystemWorks and getting the computer running again.
Computers still must come a long way before they are truly easy to use. It seems that every weekend I need to tend to one computer or another to ensure that they are running smoothly.
Maybe it would be simpler if we had a single computer in the house. Our reality is that we have enough computers and computer equipment in the house to run a small business - and they all get frequent use. Computers are an integral part of our household, and they are certainly the most used electrical appliance in the house. But unlike a TV set, current computer technology requires constant maintenance and upkeep.
Our computers are all networked (mostly wirelessly), printers are shared, Media Centers are scheduled to record TV shows (that never get watched), individual user accounts are setup for each member of the household as well as frequent guests. Add on top of that the need to update both system and application software - which every company seems to have their own update mechanism. There is enough work here to keep an IT person occupied most of the week. Unfortunately, I am the IT department, and the work must be squeezed into busy weekends - with sleep often being the looser in this process.
In our household at least, the typical maintenance shores (mowing the lawn, yard work, house repair, car repair, etc...) have been replaced with computer maintenance shores: data backup, wireless coverage, replacing print cartridges, system optimization, software updates, software installation, etc. You would think that you could get the machines installed once and leave them alone after that. But the reality is very different. This problem unfortunately is not unique to Windows users, I am running into similar issues with my Macs. This week alone I have had to update iTunes, Safari, Etco, and Graphics Converter. And I am not even counting replacing the trial software with full licensed versions.
When are we going to see computers that can really be used by the general population with little or no human maintenance required?
Maybe there is a great business opportunity here somewhere: remote system management for household computers. Until then, I continue to spend a significant par to my weekend optimizing our computer to ensure that they will run smoothly over the rest of the week.
The industry as a whole needs a wake-up call in this respect. I hope both Apple and Microsoft are investing a lot of time and effort on making their respective operating system much easier to use and operate over the course of time. And I hope the process they come up with can be extended to ISVs so users have a single place to go for all system/softare maintenance.
