OS X has a system wide spell checker. Any application that wants to can make use of this service. Best part is that they all share the same dictionary with all of your added words. That's cool!
AdiumX makes use of this service by default!
Safari supports it as well, but it is off by default. To enable Safari to use the spell checker, open a web page that has a text box (i.e., http://www.google.com) put the cursor in the text box field and go to Edit, Spelling and check Check Spelling as You Type. Weird spot for this preference setting, I would have expected to find it in preferences. Once you set it, it will stay on for every web site.
MSN Messenger for OS X and Firefox on the other hand chooses not to use it - go figure.
I hope more and more applications choose to make use of the system wide spell checker.
IMO its retarded that they force me to use it. I am _currently_ searching a way to disable it SYSTEMWIDE ! and no luck.

Heh! It comes in handy in my case, but I can see how it would be usefull to turn it off. Sorry I can't help there.
